BC Humane Society is saving lives across the province

BCHS is an umbrella organization that is working hard to bring together like-minded, non-profit animal rescue groups. Our common goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home as many animals in need as possible. Though we work with many different organizations, we are an independent humane society. We serve the needs of animals in BC, and we operate without any provincial funding. We are powered by the generous donations of people like you! If you would like to help animals in need today.

Our focus is on outreach to remote and rural communities in British Columbia. Many areas in the province do not have the resources or means to manage animal populations. With our mandate, we are working to meet this need and address critical opportunities in these communities in a positive way. We accept many difficult cases, and provide animals with necessary treatment including emergency medical care, surgery, and other life saving help.

In addition to our community outreach programs, BCHS is working to raise awareness about the dog sledding industry and to find homes for retired sled dogs. In fact, we have already matched over 300 fired or retired working dogs with loving families! If you’d like to learn more about sleddies as pets and see some awesome success stories.

BCHS believes all animals deserve a loving home.

BCHS does not have a physical shelter or location. Instead, we have developed a comprehensive foster program across the province, which helps keep our administrative costs low. It also gives each animal a chance to begin the transition into home life before they are adopted. As a result, this strong and efficient network means that your donations have a direct and powerful impact on changing the lives of countless animals who are at risk.

"We strive to work together on our commonalities, rather than our differences, so that our work can be sustainable and effective over the long term."

Working together for a brighter future for animals.

Why Our Work is Important

Our Mission: Provide leadership for improving the lives of animals by alleviating their suffering or neglect. We do this by rescuing, sheltering, healing, adopting, and advocating for animals in need, while inspiring community action and compassion on their behalf.

We are focused on establishing and operating a provincial coalition of animal rescue and welfare organizations to promote, encourage, and support responsible companion animal rescue efforts and activities.

Our Vision: We envision a more compassionate future where animals are valued, protected, and treated with respect.

Our Core Values:

  • To provide safe refuge, compassionate care, and forever homes for B.C. animals in need.

  • To think differently about animal welfare, led by this guiding principle:“Are we doing the right thing for these animals?”

  • To foster community understanding of the issues of responsible pet ownership, animal neglect and abuse, and overpopulation, through education and advocacy.

  • To respect and honour the heart and soul of our organization — our volunteers.

  • To operate our programs with integrity and transparency, in a manner that secures a financially viable future through a strong commitment to fundraising, volunteer, and membership development.
